Dracaena WinesWelcome to our latest installment of #WinephabetStreet. In this series,Debbie Gioquindo and I will be working our way through the wine world by way of the alphabet. Each month we will take the next letter in the alphabet and learn the characteristics and history of the grape, as well as suggested wine pairings. So uncork, unscrew or saber that bottle and connect with us as we chat, laugh and drink wine all in a laid back atmosphere.

S is for Sangiovese

Sangiovese is a thin-skinned, late ripening, rather finicky grape. While you can find Sangiovese throughout all of Italy, it is grows most abundantly and is most well-known in Central Italy, specifically the Mediterranean region of Tuscany. It is often harvested beyond mid-October.

This late harvesting provides a rich, alcoholic and long-lived wine in hot years, but can create problems of high acidity and hard tannins in cool years. When the vine is allowed to overproduced the wine’s acidity is accentuated and the color is lightened, which can oxidize and start to brown at a young age.  Since it is thin-skinned it is susceptible to rot in cool and damp years which since it hangs late, could pose a problem in areas that have rainy Octobers.

  1. Sangiovese is probably my go to grape. I love that it’s acidity makes it the perfect food wine especially for dishes with a tomato base.

It’s a happy thing for me that Sanigiovese is being grown all throughout California and even in Walla Walla!

My favorite American Sangiovese is made by two producers. Luna Vineyards in Napa and Robert Renzoni in Temecula. Both make exceptional examples of the grape.

    Great topic!

    1. I have had Luna, but never Renzoni. You will have to show me when we get there in the summer! (yep- still trying to get you to go with me!) I really do enjoy it also. Perfect for me since I practically live on pasta! The Reserva I had for the episode was stellar! I ran back and got more!

  2. Hi, Lori, great topic. I think a can discuss Sangiovese all the time – so many styles and history etc.
It’s been a while by the way – I was briefly in China, no serious (Chinese) wines this time though.
But internet troubles are very serious there.

    Cheers

    1. Wow! China! you do travel a lot, don’t you! That’s great. Thanks for reading. I also love Sangiovese- so many expressions.

    1. agree! It has so much variety it is like experiencing something new/different every time! And so much to offer.
