Dracaena WinesWelcome to our next installment of #WinephabetStreet. In this series, Debbie Gioquindo and I will be working our way through the wine world by way of the alphabet. Each month we will take the next letter in the alphabet and learn the characteristics and history of the grape, as well as suggested wine pairings. So uncork, unscrew or saber that bottle and connect with us as we chat, laugh and drink wine all in a laid back atmosphere.

L is for Lambrusco

Lambrusco can be traced back to being one of the oldest grape varieties with a heritage of wild vines. The ancient Romans referred to it as Labrusca, whose etymology is Labrun, which means edge or border. This is a perfect name, since the vines grew wildly along the edges of the fields. These vines are ‘non-domesticated grapevines.’

Lambrusco, is very different than other grape varieties that we are use to discussing. Chardonnay, Merlot, etc are genetically similar with specific clones, where as Lambrusco freely pollinates in the wild with other grapes, dandelions, wildflowers, etc. producing a large number of different Lambrusco varieties.
